James Rhodes is a United States Air Force officer and Tony Stark's closest friend, who was read in early on Tony's double life as Iron Man and eventually took command of one of Stark's suits himself. Fighting as War Machine, and later in an armored, leg-brace-equipped suit after a battlefield injury left him paralyzed, he has served as a steady military counterpart to Tony's more improvisational style across the Avengers' campaigns.
