In 1942, Steve Rogers is a small, sickly young man from Brooklyn with an unwavering moral compass and an equally unwavering desire to serve his country. Despite being rejected from military service five times due to his poor health, Steve refuses to give up. His best friend Bucky Barnes, about to ship out with the 107th Infantry, worries about Steve but admires his determination.
At a technology expo, Steve's persistence catches the attention of Dr. Abraham Erskine, a German scientist who defected from the Nazis. Erskine sees something special in Steve—not strength or size, but character. He recruits Steve for a secret program called Project Rebirth, designed to create super-soldiers. Colonel Chester Phillips is skeptical of the scrawny recruit, but Agent Peggy Carter, a British officer working with the Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR), recognizes Steve's heart.
The experiment is a success beyond imagination. Injected with Erskine's serum and bombarded with "vita-rays," Steve emerges tall, muscular, and at the peak of human potential. But tragedy strikes immediately: a HYDRA spy assassinates Erskine and destroys the remaining serum. Steve chases down the assassin, but the knowledge of the serum dies with its creator. Steve is the first and last super-soldier.
Rather than send him into combat, the government uses Steve as a propaganda tool: "Captain America," performing in stage shows and selling war bonds. Steve is miserable, feeling like a dancing monkey while real soldiers die. Everything changes when he learns that Bucky's unit has been captured by HYDRA.
HYDRA, led by Johann Schmidt—known as the Red Skull—is the Nazi deep science division, but Schmidt has ambitions beyond Hitler. His own imperfect super-soldier experiment left him disfigured but powerful. He has discovered the Tesseract, a cosmic artifact of immense energy that he believes will let him conquer the world.
Steve disobeys orders and parachutes behind enemy lines with Peggy and Howard Stark's help. He single-handedly infiltrates the HYDRA facility, frees hundreds of prisoners including Bucky, and confronts the Red Skull. Schmidt escapes, but Steve has proven himself. Colonel Phillips gives him command of a special unit, the Howling Commandos, to destroy HYDRA's bases across Europe.
Steve is given a unique shield made of vibranium, an indestructible metal. Over months of combat, Captain America and his team systematically dismantle HYDRA's operations. But the final mission goes wrong: during an assault on a moving train, Bucky falls to his apparent death. Steve is devastated but pushes forward, determined to end HYDRA.
The climactic battle takes place aboard Schmidt's massive aircraft, the Valkyrie, loaded with weapons of mass destruction bound for American cities. Steve fights through the ship and confronts the Red Skull. During their battle, Schmidt grabs the Tesseract with his bare hands. The cosmic artifact activates, seemingly disintegrating him and burning through the aircraft's hull before falling into the ocean.
With the plane damaged and the autopilot locked, Steve faces an impossible choice. He could try to escape, but the plane would crash into populated areas. Instead, he contacts Peggy by radio and tells her he has to put the plane down in the Arctic. Their conversation ends with a promise: a dance that will never happen. Steve crashes the Valkyrie into the ice.
Seventy years later, a S.H.I.E.L.D. team discovers the frozen aircraft. Inside, they find Steve Rogers, alive, preserved by the serum and the ice. He wakes up in a fake 1940s hospital room, but quickly realizes the deception and escapes into modern-day Times Square. Nick Fury finds him there, overwhelmed by a world that moved on without him.
"You've been asleep, Cap," Fury tells him. "For almost seventy years." Steve has won the war but lost everything he knew. In a post-credits scene, Fury approaches Steve in a boxing gym, telling him about a mission to save the world. Steve responds, "Trying to get me back in the world?" Fury answers, "Trying to save it."
