Johann Schmidt was a Nazi scientist who underwent an early, unstable version of the Super Soldier Serum that left his face permanently disfigured into a skull-like visage, giving rise to the name Red Skull. As the head of the science-division-turned-cult Hydra, he sought the power of the Tesseract before being pulled through a portal it opened, and later served for millennia as the stranded keeper of the Soul Stone on Vormir.
