Wakanda is a miracle hidden in plain sight. For centuries, this African nation has possessed vibranium—a meteorite metal with impossible properties—and used it to build a civilization far beyond anything the outside world can imagine. To protect themselves from colonizers, they hid behind the image of a poor, developing country. The world never knew.
T'Challa returns home to claim the throne after T'Chaka's assassination in Vienna. The coronation ceremony requires him to be stripped of the Black Panther's powers and face any challenger in ritual combat. M'Baku of the Jabari tribe challenges him. T'Challa wins but spares M'Baku's life—a mercy that proves significant later.
Erik Stevens, known as Killmonger, is the son of N'Jobu, T'Chaka's brother, who was killed by T'Chaka himself after betraying Wakanda. Erik was abandoned in Oakland as a child and has spent his entire life training—MIT graduate, Navy SEAL, black ops assassin—to return to Wakanda and end its isolationism.
Killmonger argues that Wakanda watched the slave trade, colonialism, the civil rights movement, apartheid, and mass incarceration without intervening. Despite having the power to help, they chose to hide. "It's about two billion people all over the world that looks like us. But their lives are a lot harder. Wakanda has the tools to liberate 'em all," Erik tells the tribal council.
The ritual combat between T'Challa and Killmonger is the film's turning point. Erik wins, throwing T'Challa over the waterfall and taking the throne legitimately by Wakandan law. He is not a usurper but the rightful king. His first act is to prepare Wakanda's weapons for global distribution to arm oppressed people everywhere for revolution.
Nakia, Shuri, Ramonda, and the Dora Milaje refuse to serve him. They find T'Challa alive, rescued by the Jabari, and bring him back. The final battle splits Wakanda—those loyal to Killmonger versus those loyal to T'Challa—while the two kings fight in the vibranium mines beneath the surface.
T'Challa defeats Erik but offers to heal him. Killmonger refuses: "Just bury me in the ocean with my ancestors that jumped from the ships because they knew death was better than bondage." He dies watching a Wakandan sunset he'd dreamed of his whole life.
The film ends with T'Challa implementing what Killmonger demanded, though not through Killmonger's methods. Wakanda reveals itself to the world. T'Challa announces outreach programs, starting in Oakland—where N'Jobu died and where Erik grew up alone. Wakanda will share its technology, knowledge, and resources. The era of isolation is over.
