Ivan Vanko is the son of a Russian scientist who once collaborated with Howard Stark before being deported and discredited, leaving Ivan to inherit both his father's arc reactor research and his grievance against the Stark family. Using whip-like energy tethers and a homemade arc reactor of his own, he operated as Whiplash, building drone armies and dueling Tony Stark in and out of the ring.

First turns up in Iron Man 2.
