The Last Stand asks a question more psychologically complex than any superhero film should ask: Would you cure yourself if you could? It is a film about identity, choice, and the cruelty of assuming what others should want for themselves.
The "cure" is the film's central metaphor. It is presented as salvation by some, as extinction by others. Mutants are divided by the simple question: Is mutation a disease or an identity? Those born mutant—like Rogue, whose power isolates her—see cure as restoration. Those for whom mutation is intrinsic to their sense of self—like Magneto, whose power is not separate from his humanity but constitutive of it—see cure as annihilation. The film does not present one answer as correct. It presents them as genuinely irreconcilable.
This is where the film's tragedy emerges. Professor Xavier believes in choice. Magneto believes in resistance. Magneto decides that mutants must destroy the cure facility, which means killing humans. Xavier cannot accept this. Their ideological split is not about whether mutants deserve rights; it is about what violence is justified to protect those rights. Xavier says mutants must be better than their oppressors. Magneto says idealism is the privilege of those not yet hunted. Both men are right and both men are wrong.
Jean Grey's return is where psychology becomes catastrophe. She returns from death transformed by Stryker's experiments and her own power. Her mind is fractured into competing consciousnesses: Jean, who is capable of love, and Phoenix, who is capable of infinite destruction. The film uses this split to ask whether trauma can be integrated or whether it can only consume. Jean cannot choose not to destroy. The power has become her, and she cannot be separated from it.
In the climax, Jean asks Wolverine to kill her. She recognizes that her existence has become dangerous not because of her choices but because of her power. She is asking him to end her so that she will not destroy everything she loves. This is suicide, but suicide born from clarity rather than despair. She understands the dimensions of what she has become, and she chooses cessation over harm. Wolverine honors this choice, though the film leaves ambiguous whether this was mercy or tragedy.
What remains is profound loss. Magneto survives but is stripped of his powers, rendered powerless by the very cure he opposed. He becomes the thing he feared most: a mutant made human against his will. Xavier dies. Jean dies. The cure exists, and some mutants will choose it. The film ends not with resolution but with scattered pieces that cannot be reassembled into wholeness. The war was not won; it was survived, and survival left everyone diminished.
